A bandsaw blade is described by a few key dimensions. Knowing what they mean helps you order the correct blade and get better results from your machine.
Blade length, width and thickness
Blade length is set by your machine, so always check the dimensions specified for your model. Width is measured from the tooth tip to the back of the blade; thickness is the gauge of the band. Wider blades are stiffer and cut straighter, while narrower blades suit curved or tighter cuts.
Teeth per inch (TPI)
TPI is the number of teeth in one inch of blade. As a general rule, thin-walled material such as tube and profiles needs a finer pitch, and thick solid bar needs a coarser pitch. Having several teeth engaged in the cut at the same time helps prevent tooth damage.
Bi-metal and carbide blades
Bi-metal blades are widely used for general metal cutting. Carbide-tipped blades are chosen for harder or abrasive materials and demanding production work. Your material and cutting volume decide which is more economical.
Tips to get longer blade life
- Follow the recommended break-in procedure for a new blade
- Use the correct coolant and keep it clean
- Match cutting speed and feed to the material
- Check blade tension and guide condition regularly
